We warmly invite you, the church, and the wider community to join us in the next chapter of the Walk with our Creator series. This walk is an embodiment of our faith, the United Church of Canada’s commitment, and Sharon-Hope United Church’s dedication to striving to make right with all our relations.
In October 2024, congregations across the United Church of Canada voted in favor of a historic remit, marking an important milestone in the process of Forging Right Relations. This decision reflects the Church’s intention to “deepen Indigenization and healing in The United Church of Canada towards self-determination and the possibility of reconciliation.” A key outcome of this process will be the creation of a fully self-governing Indigenous Church within the United Church, bringing to life the Calls to the Church.
To celebrate this significant step, we are excited to announce the second part of the Walk with our Creator series: Walking the Nokiidaa Trail. “Nokiidaa” is an Ojibwa term meaning “walking together.” The Nokiidaa Trail links the communities of Aurora, Newmarket, and East Gwillimbury, winding along the East Holland River. It offers a journey through diverse landscapes, including mixed bush, meadows, wetlands, and the gentle flow of the river.
Sharon-Hope United Church is blessed to sit in the heart of this trail, making it the perfect setting for this meaningful walk. We encourage hikers, cyclists, skiers, and snowshoers to join us as we celebrate this journey of faith, connection, and reconciliation.
Let us walk together—towards healing, understanding, and hope.
The Nokiidaa Trail Route (details below)
Join the Nokiidaa Trail just north of Davis Drive or from the south end of Richardson Park. Proceed north on the trail, observing the Indigenous markers to Green Lane. Carefully cross over this busy highway at the lights at the GO station to join the trail again at the Rogers Reservoir parking lot on the north side of Green Lane east of the railway tracks. Follow the Nokiidaa Trail and it’s signs north to the corner parking lot on the east side of Old Yonge Street and south side of Mount Albert Road.
